At one point Georgia was the third-largest troop contributor for the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan (with a total population of only some 3.5 million), with only the U.S. and Britain deploying more. In August of 2008 the Pentagon airlifted all 2,000 Georgian troops in Iraq home to join in the war with Russia and South Ossetia.
