Turkmenistan isn’t and hasn’t ever been a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization or the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, though has been a member of NATO’s Partnership for Peace military partnership since 1993. It is the only Turkic-speaking former Soviet republic not to have joined the Organization of Turkic States (where the others, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, are full members), though a year ago it became an observer of the expanding pan-Turkic bloc. The following feature indicates it may soon be a full member.
Bringing Turkmenistan into that orbit would secure 60% of Caspian Sea littoral nations (with the area’s vast energy resources) – Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan – for both the Organization of Turkic States and NATO, further isolating Iran and Russia and displacing them as gas and oil suppliers to Europe. – RR.
