Poland to provide Ukraine with another 60 tanks in addition to previously announced Leopard 2 – Morawiecki

Poland will provide Ukraine with 60 tanks, including the PT-91 Twardy, in addition to the announced delivery of 14 Leopard 2 tanks, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in an interview with the Canadian channel CTV News.

“Right now, we are ready to send 60 of our modernized tanks, 30 of them PT-91. And on top of those tanks, 14 tanks, Leopard 2 tanks, from in our possession,” Morawiecki said.

He recalled that earlier Poland became the first country to supply tanks to Ukraine, and handed over 250 units.

“And we have said to our partners in Western Europe how many tanks we’ve already delivered, and I have quoted President Zelensky (to explain) how important it is in this kind of war to have modern tanks. Russians have several thousands, or some say even more than 15,000, of the tanks in their stores,” the prime minister stressed.

Poland to send 60 more tanks to Ukraine in addition to 14 Leopard 2

Poland has agreed to send 60 more tanks to Ukraine in addition to the 14 German-made Leopard 2 tanks it already announced it will send, the Polish premier announced on Thursday.

Stating that Poland is the first state that provided 250 main battle tanks to Ukraine around half a year ago, Mateusz Morawiecki said they are glad that Warsaw was able to convince its allies to more actively support Kyiv during his interview with Canadian CTV broadcaster.

He noted that 30 of the 60 tanks Poland will transfer would be PT-91 tanks, a heavily updated version of the Russian-made T-72 tank with local and Western components.

Poland will give 60 PT-91 Twardy tanks to Kyiv

In addition to the promised “Leopard” tanks, Poland will send 60 more “PT-91 Twardy” tanks to Kyiv.

AZERTAC reports that Andriy Yermak, the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, wrote about this on his “Telegram” channel. Warsaw has previously delivered more than 200 T-72 tanks to Ukraine.

“PT-91 Twardy” was developed in the 1990s based on the license version of the T-72M1 tank. In 1995-2002, the “Bumar Labedy” enterprise produced 232 such tanks for the Polish armed forces. The tank weighing 45.9 tons is operated by three crew members. Those tanks, which were given to Ukraine last year, are actively used in military operations.

Zelensky: Ukraine needs 300-500 tanks now

The Ukrainian army needs from 300 to 500 tanks to carry out a counteroffensive against Russian troops.

“We need 300 or 500 tanks now. That’s why I believe that we need tanks to carry out an offensive on our territory, on our land. We need armoured vehicles to protect our people, that’s all,” President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky told Sky News in an interview.

He noted that due to a long time of delivery of Western weapons, he feels relieved only when the weapons provided to Ukraine by its partners are already being used by the Ukrainian military on the battlefield.
