Earlier, former Prime Minister Yuri Lyanke said Moldova should unite with Romania to protect NATO and the European Union against military threats. According to Moldovan law, such issues must be put to a national referendum.

It should be noted that in 1918, after the local government in Chisinau decided to unite with the neighboring country, the Romanian army entered Moldova. Although the Soviet Union annexed Moldova in June 1940, Chisinau gained independence in 1991. At present, there are supporters of the idea of unification in both countries. According to opinion polls in Moldova, more than 50 percent of the population opposes unification with Romania.
