US House of Representatives approves Georgia Support Act

The United States House of Representatives has approved the Georgia Support Act, establishing a “strategic partnership” between the two countries “at the legislative level”, the Georgian foreign office said on Thursday.

The legislation underscores the US’ support for Georgia’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and European and Euro-Atlantic integration…

The bipartisan bill condemns human rights violations, illegal detentions and abductions in the Russian-occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) regions….

The bill also calls…for the establishment of international security mechanisms in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali [South Ossetia]….

The Act focuses on US-Georgia defence and security cooperation and on strengthening Georgia’s defence capabilities. The legislative piece instructs the Secretary of State to present a five-year strategy for future cooperation with Georgia. It also calls on the US administration to take effective steps to strengthen Georgia’s capabilities in combating Russian disinformation and propaganda.

In the next procedural phase the bill will be sent to the US Senate, and ultimately to the President, before entering into force if approved.

Georgia’s US Ambassador Designate: House of Representatives’ Georgia Support Act reinforces “strategic partnership”

Ambassador Designate of Georgia to the United States David Zalkaliani on Thursday said the approval of Georgia Support Act by the United States House of Representatives reinforced “strategic partnership” between the two countries.

Zalkaliani thanked the House Georgia Caucus co-chairs Adam Kinzinger and Gerry Connolly for their efforts in the success of the Act, which he said had been approved in a “critical moment for Euro-Atlantic security”, in reference to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“It sends the message of US firm support & reinforces Georgia-US strategic partnership in this critical moment for Euro-Atlantic security,” the Ambassador tweeted.

Georgian FM: US House of Representatives’ Georgia Support Act approval shows Georgia as “reliable strategic partner”

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Ilia Darchiashvili said on Thursday the approval of Georgia Support Act by the United States House of Representatives showed the “importance” of Georgia as a “reliable strategic partner” for the US.

In comments on the approval of the bill, Darchiashvili thanked the House Georgia Caucus co-chairs Adam Kinzinger and Gerry Connolly for their efforts in the success of the Act.

“Importance of Georgia as of a reliable strategic partner of the US has once again been boldly demonstrated by passing of bipartisan Georgia Support Act,” the FM tweeted.
