Pelosi: US remains “unwavering” in support of Georgia’s sovereignty in face of Russian aggression

The United States Congress “proudly stands” with the people of Georgia, and the country remains “unwavering” in its support of Georgia’s sovereignty in the face of Russian aggression, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday following a meeting with the Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili.

Pelosi said in passing the Georgia Support Act, the House had reaffirmed America’s opposition to Russia’s illegal occupation of the Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) and Abkhazia regions since the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.

“This bipartisan legislation authorises sanctions on those complicit in Russia’s human rights violations against the people of Georgia,” Pelosi said.

The House of Representatives on Thursday approved the Georgia Support Act, establishing a strategic partnership between the two countries at the legislative level.
