Karabakh corridor out of Russian peacekeepers’ control, Pashinyan tells Putin

The Lachin corridor connecting Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia has been out of the control of Russian peacekeepers for almost 20 days now, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday, December 27.

“The main issue at the moment, the most urgent issue is the crisis that exists in the Lachin Corridor. You know, the Lacin Corridor has been closed for almost 20 days. It is the zone of responsibility of the Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno Karabakh. I would like to remind that according to the trilateral declaration of the President of Russia, the President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia, the Lachin Corridor should be under the control of Russian peacekeepers, and the Republic of Azerbaijan has guaranteed the unimpeded movement of passengers, goods, and people through the Lachin Corridor,” Pashinyan said on the sidelines of an informal CIS summit.

“Now it turns out that the Lachin Corridor is not under the control of Russian peacekeepers, and I would like to discuss that situation and the available variants.”

Armenian motorcade unable to reach Karabakh due to blocked corridor

A motorcade that started from Armenia on Monday, December 26 were not able to arrive in Nagorno-Karabakh because the members of the initiative were told by the Russian peacekeeping contingent that they could not ensure their safety.

For over two weeks now, the key road has been blocked by Azerbaijanis who claim to be environmentalists. Amid the closure, a group of activists started a convoy protest from the Armenian capital of Yerevan to Stepanakert, the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, carrying New Year and Christmas presents for the children of Karabakh.

On the evening of December 26, members of the “Santa Claus Visits Everyone” 2022 initiative, who were supposed to go to Stepanakert to deliver Christmas gifts and treats to the children of Artsakh, were stopped at the Tegh community checkpoint.

Four of the drivers met with the deputy commander of the Russian peacekeeping mission without journalists as the Russians insisted that they had no right to negotiate in the presence of journalists), Aravot writes.

The deputy commander reportedly warned them that there could be a dangerous situation on the road which could go out of control and further damage the process.
