82 pct of Serbians against NATO membership – survey

Only 10 pct of Serbians would support Serbia’s membership in NATO, shows the latest annual survey by the Serbian Institute for European Affairs and pollster Ninamedia.

The percentage is thus at the lowest-ever level since the first such survey was conducted seven years ago, the Institute said in a statement.

As many as 82 pct of 1,228 respondents said they were against NATO membership and 8 pct were undecided.

The survey also shows that the majority of Serbians still hold the view that US and Western military and political interests were the main reasons behind the 1999 NATO bombing of Serbia, and a slightly smaller number of respondents believe the reason was the creation of an independent Kosovo, while some said the main reasons were the policy of Slobodan Milosevic and the demise of Yugoslavia.

Also, 29 pct of participants said they would accept a NATO apology for the bombing, 57 pct said they would not, while 14 pct were undecided.

Sixty-three percent of participants said Serbia could not benefit from NATO membership, 18 pct said the opposite, while 19 pct were undecided.

Support for Serbia-NATO cooperation is also low, with 61 pct of participants saying they are against it, while 27 pct said they supported it and 13 pct were undecided.
